A Mississippi Delta native, Jennifer Drinkwater - "JD," is an artist, a visual story teller, a paint brush author, and a cultural paint-journalist. As an Associate Professor of Visual Art and Culture at Iowa State University, Jennifer leads students through an exploratory adventure of transforming studio art into tangible and marketable practice, usefulness, productivity, and value.
Additionally, as the ISU Community Arts Specialist for Extension and Art Outreach JD breathes life into the HOW: how art-making and artistic expression can both build and shape community. Her life's portfolio includes installations in restored native Nebraska prairies; city development collaborations and partnerships on public art projects focused on "repurposing" vacant sites on Iowa main streets; igniting the American "arts & crafts" movement through spearheading community knit-bombing projects; infusing the creative experience with the rich American history and culture of jazz and the Mississippi Delta through mural paintings in Central Iowa schools, and providing audiences with affordable, accessible guides, best practices, FAQ's, How To's, and toolkits.
JD is the visionary and creator of The What's Good Project and spends much of her creative practice at her studio in Ames, Iowa. Stepping through the front door is as much of a magical whirlwind as stepping on to the 9 3/4 platform for the Hogwarts Express, right down to the address, 312 1/2 Main Street. JD has a passion for the goodness in others and the meaningful stories connected to where we live, work, and play, through the culmination of community conversations and painting.
Welcome to the Studio of the stunningly talented Jennifer Drinkwater. JD is one of four Monarch Studio Café STAR Resident Artists and a valuable member of the Creative Collective. We're so happy you're here.

The It's All Good Collection is intended as a salute to JD's heart and head space engaged in the What's Good Project (2018).
The world is inevitably full of problems, outrage, and angst - images, stories, movies, tv series, books, and even Art is often overwhelmed with trauma, hate, dissension, controversy, and discord, however; Jennifer challenges herself, her Art, her students, and her audience to simply consider "What's good."
The old adage "good begets good" is one of JD's core values and principle beliefs. The more we focus on "What's Good," the more goodness we will both give and get in return.
"The conceptualization of the What's Good Project began with asking myself these questions:
Q: What happens when we make a choice to look for what’s good where we live?
Q: Can this build momentum and lead to communities getting even better?
The What’s Good Project is inspired by the philosophy of asset-based community development. According to research, when we shift our focus from what’s wrong to what’s right, we can affect positive change where we live."

It's all about you! Once the image is yours, send it to Shutterfly, Kinko's, or Walgreens and turn it into new wall art or a calendar, print it at home, use it as a screen saver, or decorate a new office.

What is a WOLF TREE? According to the Collective's expert landscape architect and "tree whisperer" Gary L Hightshoe, and the Heritage Conservancy, a WOLF TREE is "a tree that is much older–sometimes 100-200 years older–than the surrounding trees in the area. It has low-lying branches that spread wide in all directions. The terminology is thought to have originated from foresters in the late 1900s who believed that these old, massive trees were devouring too much space and sunlight; as a result, they were often eliminated from the landscape, similar to the wolves that were being hunted down for consuming too many forest resources. Trees with higher market value were planted in their place." (Heritage Conservancy, February 2019)

A space without a plan, a story, a vision, or an intention often ends up as just that, a space. Because of the myriad competitors from every industry flooding the marketplace, businesses and professionals who aren't being intentional and strategic about using their space as an extension of their business, brand, identity, integrity, perception, likability, sense of welcoming, trustworthiness, quality, and overall professionalism are leaving relationships at the door and dollars on the table.
People unintentionally draw conclusions about who you are and what you do based on many different factors. Sometimes, our spaces can even damage our brand and business because they've taken on a life of their own creating consumer dissonance, a gap between who you say you are and what I see or how I feel when I'm in "your" space. Have you ever NOT wanted to go somewhere and you couldn't really pinpoint why? We can help you turn your space into a place, a destination, an extension of YOU!

Place Making: Turn a space into a memorable and meaningful place through our creative consulting solutions. We'd love to partner with you!
Our Artists are ridiculously talented, experienced, highly respected in their fields, and nothing less than quality professionals. We pride ourselves in the creative experience we bring to our clients' teams, organizations, and communities!

"Since 2018, I’ve been inviting people to tell me what’s good where they live. To date, two dozen people from 11 communities in Iowa (my current home) and Mississippi (my first home) have taken me up on this offer, which have resulted in over 60 paintings."
"You start to see themes about what resonates with folks. Places like the Northwest Mississippi Herald office in Water Valley that gave a retired Long Island transplant a weekly column so she could meet her new neighbors.
Or the literal and proverbial tables in stories of working through conflict, like the backroom of a coffee shop in Oskaloosa, Iowa, or the front room of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner.
Or the family farm in Rolling Fork that houses retired horses, including one called Linda Blair for her theatrics, and whose owner can only bear to be away for five days before her heart starts to break." JD
